Persistent rains open Rock Creek park sinkhole

In Local Area News

The Gainesville Parks and Recreation Department confirmed today work is ongoing to address a sinkhole at Rock Creek Veterans Park.
The Parks and Recreation Department was initially notified Monday, Feb. 3, of a small sinkhole beneath a sidewalk, described at the time as approximately 2 feet wide and 2 feet deep.

However, persistent rainfall later in the week worsened the sinkhole, which has grown to approximately 8 feet wide and 8 feet deep.

City crews have been working to address the sinkhole, which is secured by barricades and blocked off from the public. The sinkhole is not expected to impede public use of the park.
